After further consideration, we have decided to delay returning to corporate worship until May 17th. This is short notice, but please spread the word. I do not apologize for attempting an earlier resumption of services (more about that in a moment). I do, however, apologize for bringing confusion and discord to our congregation. Please accept my sincere apology.
That said, there is a profound reason that we want to return to worship. If you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, then you are indwelt with the Holy Spirit. And God wants his people to gather together in assembly. The Holy Spirit who lives in you is pushing you to be together with other believers and to follow in the footsteps of the early church – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42). If you are a believer in Jesus, then the Spirit wants you to come together with other believers for teaching, fellowship, sacrament, and prayer. That is simply the way that it is. So that sadness that you feel and anticipation of return is not just about custom and doing what you like to do (though that is part of the equation). It is a spiritual longing put there by the Lord who loves you and saved you in Jesus.
We will wait a little longer, but we will never let that longing die out.
